How we got here

2009

ABP is founded by Global Forest Partners (GFP) to acquire, manage and harvest Eucalyptus globulus (Tasmanian bluegum) plantations. Our initial holdings comprise 106,175ha of Timbercorp plantation land in Albany and the Green Triangle.

Our goal? To produce premium woodchips to meet the growing demand from the Asian pulp and paper markets.

We also partner with Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management and Birdlife Australia to ensure the preservation of the natural environment while we achieve our goals.

2012

ABP expands by acquiring 29,521ha from the Elders Forestry estate – including a seed orchard and chip handling facility in Albany. We separately acquired a state-of-the-art chip handling facility in Portland.

These acquisitions allow us to control our entire supply chain, from seed production to ship loading, solidifying a strong foundation for successful forestry operations.

2018

After appointing CEO Russ Hughes in 2015 – and securing the exclusive marketing rights to the mature trees in the Esperance region in 2017 – 2018 sees even more change.

We invest $22 million in the Portland chip terminal to ensure the facility, processes and throughput are continuously improving. We become a founding member of the Green Triangle Forestry Hub. And we implement a more environmental approach than burning off for us to use during harvest.

2019

ABP’s driver safety video is published as a free-to-share resource in a bid to reduce operating vehicle-related risk. This cements our commitment to health and safety.

2021

The Green Triangle Fire Alliance is established, which leases helicopters and fire cameras to organisations in need. And we take on the management of Reliance Forest Fibre Tasmania.

2022

Growing Leaders Development Program was established, marking the culmination of a decade focused on enhancing ABP’s leadership and culture.

2023

Career Pathways was launched, designed to attract and nurture talent within our organisation. The program offers structured opportunities for individuals to explore various roles, gain valuable experience and grow their careers. We are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce, and we believe that investing in our people is key to our success.

In addition, we proudly establish our seed orchard, Umina, in the Green Triangle – further enhancing our commitment to sustainable practices and innovation. This initiative not only supports our environmental goals but also plays a crucial role in the future of our operations.

We also celebrate a record achievement of 300 ships exported in a single year, a testament to our dedication and hard work in the industry.

Together, these milestones reflect our ongoing commitment to growth, excellence and community engagement.

2024

After 15 years of building a reputation in the Asian chip market as a highly reliable supplier of premium woodchips, ABP broadens its strategy in 2024.

We establish an External Affairs role for the Green Triangle’s hardwood industry. We also hand some of our leasehold land back to the underlying landowners, implementing an active land acquisition program instead.

Today, approximately 60% of the ABP estate is freehold (with the balance being leasehold). Because we know this provides a greater degree of land tenure certainty to us and our customers.
